Staring Death in the Face
In response to David Brook's article "Cult of Death" in the NY Times Online edition, 9/7/04:

Yes, those are some ugly people, those are some heartless, stone cold people, who waded into a Russian school last week and started killing. Those were also some narrow, cold, ethnocentric and theocentric people who trained in and then hammered a plane into the WTC's.
Those people had death in their eyes and soon, death itself.... taking hundreds, thousands along with them.
I don't think that there are many that find their killers to be beautiful... There is something cruel about every killer... Even though they usually have training and conviction on their sides...
You say they killed children. Something tells me their children have been killed. You say they killed the innocent. Something tells me their innocence had long since died. This is not justification, only perspective.
There is no repayment for these people in this world. There is only the awful realization, in exquisite detail, of all the suffering they have caused, to be reckoned with in the next...
But who is the killer, and who is the killed?
Those of us who still cling to military response, to forcing people to do our will... Will only, eventually, meet other people with the same agenda.
The agenda of the terrorist is a smaller, apparently crueler one.. aiming at the "soft target" of civilians. But denying people happiness and forcing them into cultural, economic or "democratic" submission is no solution either...
The fact is, the terrorist phenomenon is the declaration of incompetence to every sovereign government, since they can no longer protect their people... unless they start doing the opposite of what they have been doing... not by using force, but by creating peace... a peace beyond anything that we have used thus far... a powerful, unstoppable form of peace...
For some, peace is just a quiet time between wars. For the wise, peace is the manifestation of a quality of the profound, quantum level of existence...
Without harnessing that infinite power of the inner intelligence of nature, we are condemned not only to repeat history, but to become it. War has been tried. The tough response has been tried. No negotiating with terrorists has been tried.
I suspect that most people would rather watch more deaths than consider that such enlightenment is the solution to terrorism... but unless we bring infinite freedom and human development to these stressed societies, you only have more years of reading the paper in dismay or, maybe, finding yourself in a sinking ship, falling plane or, the latest, in a gymnasium of death.
It's easier to be cynical and tough. But it's that sort of people that we have in charge right now. And let's just consider how well they have been handling things. This stuff will work. It's painfully positive, cosmic, beautiful and uplifting. The "practical" people won't like it. But those people have shown their incompetence time and time again.
It's time for the cosmic reality to update the so called realists.
If they had it together, we wouldn't have to mention it.
They don't have it together.
But we can get it there.
This government will work:

The others are just flag waving.
